With funding from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund, educators and students affected by the coronavirus pandemic will receive support and training from the Mississippi Women’s University School of Women’s Education.
The $244,035 grant will establish the OWL-STAR (Strategic Training for Academic Achievement) project to improve student academic performance and increase teacher productivity by providing a comprehensive online professional development program.
"For everyone, this is a stressful period because we are going through an unprecedented era caused by COVID-19, but in this, academic learning has not stopped. W's School of Education envisions strengthening And expand its existing majors to meet the Governor’s desire to implement high-quality training for students, parents and educators to support effective online learning learning experiences,” said Melinda Lowe, Education Coordinator and OWL-STAR Program Director of the School of Education.
The online professional development of the program will support the personal and professional development of the faculty and students of The W's School of Education; PK-12 teachers and administrators; and PK-5 parents.
The project is expected to increase technical assistance and distance learning support, increase the importance of mindfulness and self-care, and reduce financial difficulties in terms of technology needs caused by the pandemic.

The grant will provide valuable and professional The knowledge of this further strengthens our hard-to-learn curriculum.” said Shelley Bock, the interim dean of the College of Education.
Students at The W's School of Education will receive an additional emergency award of $500. They may not have the technology to use at home, such as the latest computers, Wi-Fi and webcams needed to access online courses. All undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in the Faculty of Education will receive an email with all application details.
The purpose of the Coronavirus Assistance, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Law Education Stability Fund approved by the GEER Fund is to prevent, prepare for and respond to the novel coronavirus. The GEER Fund plan aims to address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on students and parents across the country, and will continue to have an impact on it. The US Department of Education awarded the GEER fund to the governor of the state through a formula. Mississippi received a grant of $34,622,872.
