Modern discoveries and customized works highlight the original architecture of this 1930s seaside resort.
Ten years ago, as an interior designer
Long-term clients (a young couple and a baby) moved from New York City to California, and they landed full-time on the peninsula south of San Francisco. But a few years later, with a second child, it’s time to find one
The environment matches the vitality of the growing family.
"They are very active, such as biking, hiking, surfing, tennis and golf. They don't have outdoor activities," said San Francisco-based Martin.
"They live full-time on the peninsula, and they hope to have a place to steal on weekends, and it's an amazing distance in just over two hours from Carmel."
In early 2018, the couple bought a 1930s back-beam house located on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean (majesticly situated above a secluded bay used as an otter sanctuary), and then moved in. Space, so Martin filled it with temporary furniture for about eight months before starting the redesign. "They want it to be casual and simple", the designer of this beach house explained that it is not actually a beach house. "If you are not familiar with this part of the California coastline, you will automatically assume that Carmel Marina is a nautical-themed beach town, but unless you are standing on the beach, there will be no beach. Here, you Surrounded by pine and oak forests, this is the magic of the area, especially this house."
As one of the first houses built on this part of the coastline more than 80 years ago, there was nothing around except the pristine scenery of the water. Although there are many other things around today, the hotel still provides a lot of privacy protection, and can overlook the ocean and coastline below. "The economy of the house is really beautiful," Martin said. "There are only three bedrooms, which is moderate by some people's standards, but the advantage (especially if it's just a family) is that they have a spacious open floor plan and can wander around in a natural environment."
Given the low-key nature of the area and the unparalleled landscape, Martin and the homeowner agreed that it should not be over-designed or decorated. Martin explained: "We want it to feel very organic and'everywhere'." "I really want everything we do indoors to disappear, so that the architecture and furniture form truly stand out."
From the entrance, the interior of the house reflects its rustic environment. Martin explained: "We repaired the oak door to keep it in harmony with the overall tone, including the old Corten steel around the doorway and the original mahogany beams." "The important thing is that we continue to speak the language of the house, so we just Turn down all the houses so that the original importance is reflected."
"Even if it's not a beach house, it's located on the ocean, and you absolutely have to keep sunlight and salt water in mind-so, except for the bedding, all fabrics are perennials, Link or Sunbrella," said the designer. her
select. "The landscape of outdoor fabrics has changed dramatically. You can buy everything from plush velvet to beautiful woven fabrics. The chairs of the Benjamin Wing Club are Studio Van Den Akker, all the way to De Sousa Hughes, and are covered with perennials. The white gold "Silky" walnut coffee table is custom-made, as are the jute and cotton rugs by Mark Nelson Deigns. Small oil painting by Alex Kanevsky From Dolby Chadwick Gallery.
The dining area is set against floor-to-ceiling windows, blending with the surrounding environment. Martin said: "Between the living room and the kitchen island, we have an oak dining table, custom-made by Nicky Kehoe in Los Angeles. It can easily accommodate 10 people." "Stahl + Band's walnut meal The chair is decorated with rich Holly Hunt leather. The slate floor (from Da Vinci marble) of the entire house matches all the mahogany perfectly."
Martin said: "We strive to maintain as much condition as possible, including existing limestone countertops and wooden cabinets." She covered the cabinets in Benjamin Moore's Deep River 1582 (Deep River 1582). And replaced the hardware, "make the room look new."
The custom-made kitchen island is a solid slab of black granite (66 inches x 96 inches x 2 inches) produced by DaVinci. Martin said: "It takes 14 people to place it." At the same time, "M Barstools by Stahl + Band makes the counter a great place for lunch with the kids."
The designer said: “There is a lot of wood here, but we like comfort. I want to make the ceiling reflect some dance, and then choose this movable Gaia pendant from Ochre.” The steel designed by Yabu Pushelberg comes from Beaver The puddle table by Henge in Mass's Leeshanzhuang and the Christopher Club chair by Studio Van Den Akker decorated with Mocha "Montauk" fabric from Link are also from De Sousa Hughes.
The designer explained: "We don't want to lose the old mahogany background, but use outdated mahogany to customize the adjustable built-in shelving unit for each side of the fireplace." The Christiana Perohn bowl set on the coffee table comes from In March, Terry St. John’s paintings and David Kulakata were from Dolby Chadwick Art Museum.
Martin explained: “Here, we painted the headboard the same color as Benjamin Moore used in the kitchen, thus maintaining the same language throughout the family.” The designer customized the bed and then covered it with John. John Pawson's RH bedding and blankets create a warm, modern feel. The bedside lamps are from Coup D'Etat in San Francisco, the bedside tables are Richard Wrightman, and the artwork is Dolby Chadwick Art Museum. Gallery) and a combination of works discovered in antiques.
"My favorite thing in the whole house is
Dibbs discovered a black-brown leather chair from the 1960s and a matching ottoman," Martin said. "For me, worn items will lower the temperature of any space, make people feel more like home, and make it easier use. "
Martin said: "I wanted to bring the homeowner’s Hudson Valley vibe into the space, so we painted the original adobe white to make it a bit brighter. I found a 1960s dresser and frosted glass ceramic on 1stdibs Lamps. Steel bed frames with custom bedding and black linen bed skirts are cheap, and the ends of each folding stool are designed by Christian Liaige. In front of the table is Preben Fabricius’ iconic 1960s bird chair, hanging above it Another painting by Alex Kanevsky."
Martin said: "These fabulous lights are actually modern Serge Mouille, originally hardwired. We had to add wires and switches, which was a challenge because we didn’t want to destroy the original adobe by drilling holes in them. .It. Similarly, we painted the adobe white to destroy the natural elements. The modular sofa is from Flexform, we love their stuff, and the fabric is perennial. The Febo chair by B&B Italia is comfortable and beautiful, and its storage cabinet is 1960 Florence Knoll of the 1950s. The carpet is the wool plain weave we found through Patterson floor coverings."
Martin said: "The hotel was built later than the main property, so the internal structure is more modern and the wood tone is lighter. We combined the two by introducing the same Benjamin Moore paint color and many rustic works, including in 1stdibs The old workbench and a series of ceramic materials found on the site.” Modular sofa from Flexform, James Kennedy's painting is acrylic magnesium alloy juniper oil, from Dolby Chadwick Gallery (Dolby Chadwick Gallery) .

I am a writer, podcaster and comedy performer, but I am also an aspiring Eames chairman. I am originally from the Upper East Side of Manhattan and currently live near Hancock Park in Los Angeles with my husband and our two dogs Lulu and Milo. I am fascinated by all aspects of decoration and design. I once spent six months choosing a soap dispenser, and I don’t even remember its appearance.
