Scott Young plans to retire from Lincoln Food Bank this spring. His tenure ranges from the 9/11 terrorist attacks to the coronavirus pandemic.
Scott Young was an executive director of Lincoln Food Bank and experienced "professional disaster bookends."
His first day at work was September 10, 2001, the day before the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
His last day will be in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic.
Young, 70, announced on Monday that he will retire from the food bank. His last day is April 30th.
He described the anxiety of sitting at his desk when he went to work the next day, but he said that in the past year, because the epidemic has affected many businesses and individuals throughout southeastern Nebraska, he felt more anxiety.
Young said that from July to December, the food bank distributed 50% more food than the same period in 2019. "That year was a very important year."
He said: "We are distributing more food than ever before."
However, growth was nothing new when Yang ran a food bank.
Under his leadership, the organization provides 12 times as many meals as it was 20 years ago, and its number of employees has more than tripled.
If it were a private company, that would be a bragging record, but unfortunately, the growth of the food bank reflects the growing demand for its services.
Young said that since he started working at the food bank, the number of poor people has increased significantly, noting that the proportion of Lincoln Public School students who are eligible for free lunches and reduced lunches has increased from 25% in 1997 to 45% now.
He said: "Poverty in the United States is increasing, as is southeastern Nebraska."
Young’s commitment to developing many of the food bank’s programs, including the addition of the BackPack program, expanding its child hunger program to further support rural communities, and the addition of the LPS emergency food storage partnership, as well as school food markets and pantry, was praised. In addition, the Food Bank provides mobile food distribution every month in each of the 16 counties it serves.
"Scott has had a huge impact in the food bank and the communities we serve in southeastern Nebraska," said Steph Vanous, chairman of the food bank's board of directors. "His enthusiasm and commitment to serving people in need laid a solid foundation for the food bank of the future."
Young will work on further expansion in the final months of the executive director. The Food Bank is in the middle of a fundraising campaign and plans to announce plans to start operations in a new and larger headquarters location in the coming weeks.
Although the Food Bank will "continue to invest in its main function of collecting and distributing food," he said it will also invest in efforts to "shorten the queue of people who need food."
Young said that the Food Bank’s board of directors has a detailed plan to have a search committee to find his successor, and he hopes that someone will be ready to take over when they leave.
He doesn’t know if this is a newcomer promoted from outside the organization or from within, but he did say that he saw “a lot of people working feverishly in the past year.” It shows that the food bank has some potential Leaders are available for selection.
As for his retirement plan, he said that in addition to spending more time with his wife, children and grandsons, this may also involve some kind of "third act."
