Marquette, Michigan (WLUC)-After at least two years of waiting, the rooms in the Inn Warming Center finally have a finishing touch. Inmates, high school students and Building Trades staff at Marquette Branch prison placed bunk beds on the top floor of the shelter.

Hotel executive director Nick Emmendorfer's room said it was a blessing to see the community unite to help solve this problem.

Emmendorfer said: "Not only do we provide a homeless shelter for the most disadvantaged in the community here, but we are also able to integrate students and projects and inmates in local prisons, and everyone gets together. Solve the problem. Homeless. It's amazing."

One of the students is Samantha Finch, a third-year student in Negaunee High School, who also participated in the CTE Middle School program. She, like many others, is very happy to be involved.

Finch said: "This is of great significance to being able to help people in need." "In minus 17 degrees, no one is worth going out on the street."

Wayne Thompson, the construction industry instructor at Marquette Branch Prison, is the one who put these beds together. He said the prisoners liked to piece together woodwork for the project and said they could use these skills to have a positive impact in the future.

Thompson said: "A better way than giving them some job skills, and then they can share them in the community."

Emmendorfer thanked everyone who made this project a reality.

He said: "I just want to thank all the members of Marquette for finally enabling us to achieve results. We need your continued support in the future."

With the new bunk beds, up to 30 homeless people will have the opportunity to sleep well in the Inn Room.

Shortly before Christmas, some young people in the Roanoke Valley got new beds because of the Salem Rotary Club and the non-profit organization "Sleeping in Paradise."

The Rotary Club and other volunteers spent two consecutive Saturdays in November among 33 bunk beds on Troutville Farm. More than 80 Rotary club members, their families and Salem High School interactive students used "SHP" measuring, sawing, drilling, hammering, sanding, dyeing and branding of headboards and footboards, and placed 33 bunk beds. Therefore, "No children sleep on our floor", the mission of "Sleep in Heaven".

Shortly before Christmas, some beds (all with mattresses, sheets, pillow cases and quilts) were delivered locally.

Roanoke SHP chapter president David Jones said: "A bunk bed allows two children to leave the floor." He said that an estimated $350 per bed covered with linen.

The Salem Rotary Club raised US$5,750 through the club and the Glenvar Rotary Club, and received a matching fund from the Rotary District 7570 to build a shop.

Jones said: “Children’s insomnia is a national problem. As a national non-profit organization across the country, SHP provides a solution.”

SHP Roanoke was established in December 2019 and delivered the first bunk bed in January 2020. Since then, the organization has delivered more than 150 bunk beds and made more than 225 waiting for delivery.

Members of the Hidden Valley Country Club spent more than 100 hoodies in December, adding to their first holiday hoodie campaign.

The club donated the hoodie to the West End Youth Center in January.

General Manager Ken Crowder said that the reason the club chose hoodies is that children tend to follow them.

"Many parents know that children tend to leave jackets in schools, playgrounds or buses. Hoodie and sweatshirts are better than jackets, so they are more likely to go home every day," he explained.

Crowder said: “As employees and members, we have to do our part to ensure that as many children as possible stay warm throughout the winter.” Hidden Valley Country Club has a history of contributing to the community, including more than $25,000. In the past two years, funds have been raised for the Carilion Children's Clinic through the club’s male guests.

Because of defects in the upper and lower bunks, they were worried about being "trapped, fallen and strangled", so the children's bunk beds were recalled.

The Product Safety Agency of Australia (PSA) urgently recalled Australian hardwood bunk beds provided by Organature in Victoria, including single, king-size and double single sizes. 

The wooden bunk beds sold nationwide from August 24, 2015 to July 27 last year, pose a major problem that may cause injuries to young children.

PSA has warned consumers that the current state of the bed frame does not meet the requirements of the mandatory manufacturing standards for bunk beds. 

The Australian Product Safety Authority stated: "The space on the top bunks is larger than the standard allows." 

Consumers who have purchased any bunk beds should stop using them and wait until Organature directly contacts them to ensure they have the correct details.   

The Australian Department of Product Safety warns consumers that the upper bunk space is larger than the standard allowed space, which may cause safety hazards to children 

PSA said in a statement: "The organization will then provide consumers with parts to repair themselves."    

If the consumer cannot complete the repair independently, the Organization will finalize an alternative arrangement.
