Steven Chilton Architects reveals visuals of Guangzhou Show Theatre

Revealed the visual effects of its Guangzhou Performance Theater, which is currently under construction

The theater will have a 2,000-seat auditorium enclosed in a curtain wall directly informed by the history of Guangzhou, which is an important part of the Silk Road trade route.

"Our clients hope that the building will resonate with Guangzhou's history and culture," he explained.

He told Dezeen: "This city has a long history of significance. It is the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. It has been an important trading port since the Han Dynasty."

"Silk was first developed in China. The earliest example can be traced back to 3,500 BC. Its historical and cultural significance and unique physical characteristics attracted us."

The circular main auditorium will be located in the center of the building, surrounded by supplementary spaces, including a large three-story entrance hall.

Around the building, Steven Chilton architects designed a facade that resembles a silk paved on the building.

It will consist of porous anodized aluminum curved panels supported on a steel frame, which can be seen in the entrance hall of the building.

Chilton said: "According to the plan, the exterior of the building consists of 10 softly curved and twisted creases, which are designed to evoke the drape and texture of silk."

He continued: "The process of entering the building is formed by the seamless connection of the'silk' material because it gradually accumulates on the ground."

"Silk is characterized by its bright highlights. In order to capture this effect, we recommend using anodized aluminum for the gloss and specular reflection characteristics of the cladding."

The siding of the theater will turn bright red to pay tribute to the value of the theater company.

Chilton said: "Red corresponds to fire in Chinese culture and symbolizes good luck, celebration, vitality and joy."

"We think these qualities resonate very well with the spirit and values ​​of the theater company and the nature of its performance."
