Small bedrooms present a huge challenge, especially if you don’t have enough closets or need to accommodate a home office. This is why we asked five design and organization experts how to make the most of the small bedroom, and then tested the decorating suggestions in a 250 square foot apartment in New York City. I have been designing small spaces for more than seven years, and my books include The New York Times (now the parent company of Wirecutter), Refinery 29, Apartment Therapy, Architectural Digest and Domino. For this guide, I studied hundreds of bedroom furniture sold through Amazon, Bedbass and Bedende department stores, container stores, IKEA, Target and other retailers. I tested a dozen items in my 250-square-foot apartment and personally evaluated other products from IKEA and West Elm.

Before deciding what to buy, consider the types of items that will work best in the small bedroom. Our experts recommend considering these four general guidelines to help maximize every inch.

In small bedrooms, using storage beds is a foolproof way to gain some extra space. Whether it's built-in drawers, hidden compartments or smaller spaces, these bed frames can provide some unexpected storage space.

This affordable bed is the only one we found. When you don’t have enough space to pull out the drawer, you can lift it up to provide plenty of storage space inside.

It is the ideal bed to squeeze into small rooms or narrow bedroom corners. It can provide as much storage space as our built-in drawer bed, but does not need any gaps around the frame. Instead, a spring-assisted lift turns the mattress over, exposing the hidden storage area inside. Nicole Anzia, the organizer and founder of Neatnik, especially recommends Malm as a small bedroom, “It’s great when you don’t have enough space for pull-out drawers beside your bed.” It also has a relatively small and large footprint. The bed is 83½ inches long and 66 inches wide.

Malm can provide many functions, but the price is less than one-third of the price of some other storage beds we considered. However, even if it provides you with a lot of storage space, it will not replace the dressing table. Since the inside is not as easy to access as our recommended bed with drawers, it is more suitable for storing seasonal or rarely used items, rather than daily necessities. However, its large central compartment is more suitable for storing large or clumsy items that require more space than drawers, such as quilts or cold-proof jackets.

This loft bed is the most stylish bed we have found and one of the few that can accommodate a full-size mattress.

It is the best loft bed we found for adults. It is much better than any other product we have seen, and it has a full size, and many of the loft beds we studied can only be used in pairs. Loft beds are perfect for small bedrooms because they free up the space below. As interior designer Tali Roth said when talking about Perch: “It looks great and can be placed under the table or on the seats and on the shelves on the wall.”

Perch is the only loft bed we have found. Its closed side hides the mattress (up to 8 inches deep), making it look smoother than our bed made of metal or wood. It is made of birch plywood, so we think it is stronger than the metal bed we found, for example

Purch’s ladder has flat steps, so it is easier to climb than the standard metal rail steps we see on many loft beds. Even better, the ladder can be installed on both sides of the frame, so it is more versatile for spaces that require a specific layout. Although its price is US$1,650, it is more expensive than other loft beds we have seen, but its quality construction, full size and stylish design are just what you need to pay.

Modu-licious's birch plywood drawers span the sides of the 84-inch-long frame, so they can make the most of every inch under the bed. However, unlike the reversible Malm, the drawers on Modu-licious need at least 30 inches to fully open, so if your bed is close to the wall, they will not be too functional. The price of this bed is more than four times higher than that of Malm. If you plan to use the storage bed for a long time, we think it is worth the investment. Otherwise, our cheaper proposal may be more appropriate.

Murphy beds (also called wall beds) fold up when not in use, so it is a smart way to free up some floor space during the day. they are

No matter where you need to place lights or where you only need to charge your phone, bedside storage is essential. These bedside tables will squeeze into almost any space, but provide enough space to store your nightly essentials.

This stylish bedside table is suitable for placement in a smaller bedside space, but still offers a deep drawer, which is more suitable for hiding equipment (and its cables) than most other equipment we found.

Less than a foot wide,

Although it’s not a dedicated bedside table, we think

It is the best way to store night necessities without taking up any floor space. It is clean and modern, inexpensive, and easy to install. Install one or two beside the bed to enjoy all the convenience of the table without occupying the space. Although we don't recommend other closeable drawers for bedside tables, its top surface size is 16 x 8 inches, so its space is only smaller than Nordli.

At the time of writing, the price of Bijou is about $30, which looks much more expensive than it is now. Clean lines and open storage compartments give it a refined outline. It is also firmly made of a metal box and a thick (3/4 inch) melamine top. It can hold up to 10 pounds when it is fully assembled and firmly mounted on the wall with anchors (included).

Finding a way to incorporate a work space into a small bedroom or studio is not always easy, but it is sometimes necessary. Each of these desks will fit into a narrow space, but also provide enough space to actually do some work.
