Nassau police said a small plane crashed in Old Bethpage on Sunday afternoon. Call time is 1:05pm
According to Oyster Bay Town, the pilot injured in the crash was the only person on board. When rescuers found him, he was conscious. The police said the pilot was in stable condition in a nearby hospital.
A highway patrol officer saw a small plane descend and appeared to be in distress near a winding road. The officer entered the crashed plane and found the pilot nailed in the cockpit about 10 feet above the ground. The plane is also leaking oil.
The photos at the scene showed that the aircraft was located near the Old Bethpage Solid Waste Complex at 101 Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road. There is a large field behind the building.
Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said: "Although it is always frightening, we are lucky that this plane crash occurred in an area where there are no houses, schools or other buildings." "Fortunately, the pilot. He was the only person on board and was able to navigate to the plane in some way, causing the least damage. We pray for him and wish him a speedy recovery."
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
The Bethpage and Melville fire departments helped stabilize the aircraft.
The 19-year-old Shanderick Dorsey was dying and was in a coma for two months, but his mother's faith helped him through the difficult time and gave him a new life.
