Sauquoit Valley High School has a better-performing upgraded auditorium, the culmination of the district’s recently completed $19.9 million capital project.
The auditorium, which was built in 1932, has undergone an appearance upgrade in the past few years, but the recent renovation project has taken a step forward.
"One of the main problems in the old auditorium is the seating," Superintendent Ronald Wheelock said in an email. "The seats are very tight and a little uncomfortable. The new auditorium has solved this problem. The number of seats has been increased from 450 to 574. Now all seats can enjoy the scenery of the stage and the front of the stage."
He said that the project also includes new sound systems, lighting, stage hoisting and other upgrades to make the space function better.
According to Ashley McGraw Architects, the architect of the project, the auditorium is now also divided into two floors on its balcony, with accessible seats for the disabled and tablet armrests on the seats, so the auditorium can be used for the New York State Regency exam.
"The aesthetics of the new auditorium gives a more modern and beautiful appearance," Wheelock said. "Through this project, the community has made a huge and admirable investment in our region, which will benefit our students for many years."
The first phase of the capital construction project was carried out in the 2016-17 school year, including roof and floor works for schools in all regions. The second phase of 2017-18 includes paving, replacing sidewalks, installing outdoor basketball courts in middle schools, building stair towers in high schools, refurbishing transportation offices, and performing HVAC work in all schools.
The third phase that has now been completed includes the renovation of the high school band and choir suites, the renovation and expansion of the fitness center, and the renovation of the auditorium.
