Members of the Milton School Board of Directors were invited to visit Milton High School on Monday to understand the progress of the referendum construction. In the metal laboratory, each masonry zone in the background represents a welding room. The gas in the welding shop will be stored in another room and piped to various areas of the laboratory. Shown here are David Holterman, member of the school board from left to right, Joe Martin, chairman of the school board, Mike Huffman of Huffman Facility Development, and Shelly Crull Hanke, member of the school board, looking through the window to the adjacent classroom.
The excavation of the new swimming pool at Milton High School is nearly complete.
The lower level of the STEM wing at Milton High School includes a manufacturing laboratory, which is shown here, as well as an engine laboratory, trade laboratory, wood laboratory, metal laboratory, and space for engineering and computer science. On the other side of the hall is the Agricultural Science and Media Room.
Justin Buchholz, project manager of JP Cullen, closed the field villa after leading the Milton School Board of Trustees to visit the high school renovation project on Monday.
As the new curriculum for middle and high schools approached, the Milton School Board approved three other custodial positions on Monday to keep the facilities clean.
The board of directors approved an additional full-time custodian in the middle school, which increased the number of custodians by 21,738 square feet.
"This is a space mainly used for academic classrooms and requires more intensive cleaning every night," said Stephen Schantz, director of buildings and venues, in a memo to the board.
The high school has 107,499 square feet of additional space and will receive 1.5 additional custodian positions. He said that new science, technology, engineering, and math (or STEM) have the functions of classrooms and restrooms, which require more cleaning than gyms or public areas.
Shantz said it is important to increase positions now to allow time to post jobs, hiring and training. He said that new employees can help eventually clean up new employees and provide mobile classrooms and equipment.
Shantz said the last cleaning cost in the budget was $13,000, compared to $64,000 for high school.
Regional Human Resources Director Chris Tukiendorf said that the cost (estimated for the remainder of the school year) for the 83-day 2.5 custodial positions is $40,280.
On Monday, the school board members Joe Martin, Shelly Crull-Hanke and Dave Holterman led by JP Cullen project manager Justin Buchholz visited the high school.
Milton High School’s new STEM wing is expected to be ready for student guidance on April 5.
The floor plan of the first floor of the STEM wing shows three science rooms, two chemistry rooms and six math rooms. The lower level includes the engine laboratory, trade laboratory, wood laboratory, manufacturing laboratory and metal laboratory, as well as the adjacent engineering and computer science rooms.
There are two agricultural science and media rooms across the hall.
The excavation of the high school’s new swimming pool is nearly complete, and the corridors between the swimming pool and the field houses are under construction.
"The big milestone coming is that we will run out of the (existing) swimming pool on Monday," Schantz said after the tour.
Buchholz said that the work on the pool area will be completed after the end of the school year. He said that all renovations and additions will be completed in mid-August.
Monday’s tour does not include the renovation of the middle school, but with the ongoing installation of the final decoration materials, the work is in progress. Officials said the furniture will be moved into the new house in the first week of February, and kitchen equipment is currently being installed.
